19. Kao Yai, Thailand March '99

Kao Yai National Park is located about four hours' drive northeast from Bangkok. It's very popular with Thai tourists, and is a very relaxing place to come and escape the Bangkok crowds. It's a huge park, which is good because the weekend crowds are pretty huge as well. In addition to getting back to nature, it's also weirdly popular among Thais as something of a wild west outpost. There are several places that are the Thai equivalent of dude ranches, and people dress up in cowboy hats and boots and square dance and eat barbecue. As far as I can tell, there's absolutely no reason for this, but to each his own, I guess.
