As an aside, in our last day we walked around Dorsoduro, which I think is the prettiest area of Venice for canalviewing, and it's relatively convenient to Piazza San Marco. So if you want to do Venice in a couple of days rather than the week we spent here, a day around San Marco and a day split on a boat down the Canal Grande and walking around Dorsoduro would give you a great overview of the place.
