We woke up early Monday to spend the day among the ruins. We walked through the deserted city aiming toward the Forum and Coliseum, but we deviated a bit from the ruins theme to stop by Trevi Fountain. The massive fountain, complete with a fake palace facade, is reached down a bunch of tiny alleys, and seems completely out of place in this small, otherwise undistinguished plaza. It was built at the height of the Baroque era, and is full of Baroque excess, which makes it really enjoyable. One fun note, the designer who worked on this died from diseases brought on by living in the mists of the fountain for the two decades it took to complete. Thanks to movies like Three Coins in a Fountain and Roman Holiday it's high up on the tourist must-see lists, but if you come at some ridiculously early hour like we did, you can have the fountain all to yourself.
