The nearby Barberini Palace is probably the oldest feeling building I've ever been in. It was the family compound of the Barberini family, who gave the world Pope Urban VIII. The Pope returned the favor, spending massive amounts of the church's money on his family's palace. He managed to have both Bernini and Borromini work on this, despite the fact that these two archrival architects despised one another. I'm not sure what happened to the family, but it appears to have abandoned the palace many centuries ago, and very little was spent on it since. It now houses a major art collection in its spooky, creaky dusty rooms. I think the rooms were at one point quite splendid, but it's definitely a very faded glory now.
