26. Kurashiki

Kurashiki is one of the most popular tourist spots in Japan, but I wouldn't consider it a trip highlight. Its main claim to fame is that, in the midst of the giant urban strip stretching along the coast of Japan, this town somehow didn't get destroyed in the war or paved over in the industrialization wave that followed. So it does give you a good idea of what a Japanese village would look like, except for the stress that four million visitors a year puts on the traditional village atmosphere. It's pretty, and has a nice canal running down the middle of it, but there's not much to see or do apart from buying souvenirs, so we were in and out pretty quickly.
