30. Hase




After Kamakura we continued to Hase, a coastal town a short train ride away. The Minamotos had this giant bronze Buddha built to rival the Nara temple. It too was enclosed in a huge wooden building until 1495, when a tsunami washed the building (and the town) away. Since that time the statue has stayed outside, and become one of the most famous images of Japan.
