31. Matsumoto

Another day, another day trip, this one involving a longer than usual train ride inland from Tokyo to the Japanese Alps. the mountains, which sprang to fame as the host of the Winter Olympics in Nagano a few years before our visit. This time we were headed for the castle town of Matsumoto and the sake town of Narai. This area generally is off the tourist circuit, and that alone is sufficient reason to make the trip, but the mountain scenery also provided much nicer train viewing than the usual petrochemical plants and high rise apartments of the previous trips.
