93. Delft

Because it was a short stopover, we only took one daytrip outside Amsterdam, to Delft. It's a lively little city and the historical heart of the country. And the heart of the heart is the old market square, which is always bustling with a big farmers market and scores of touristy outdoor cafes. The houses lining the large square are typical Dutch merchant homes, apart from the very obvious exception of city hall. This building started life as the local count's prison in the thirteenth century, but everything except the old tower sticking out of the top in the photo burned down in 1618. The present building was then built to replace the prison and serve as city hall. Nowadays it's a wedding factory, and one of the most popular places in the Netherlands to get married.
