The City is the financial capital of Europe, and probably the world, although New York would object. I worked there for three years, during which time I got used to the rhythm of the place. Grumpy workers streaming off the tube every morning, drunk traders having long drunk lunches in every pub, then the City becomes deserted after 6 pm, as people either go home or work in their offices all night. When I worked there, there were no restaurants open in the evening, so when we worked late, the only place to eat was a Marks and Spencer supermarket. Since we were eating at our desk preparing a healthy dinner was out of the question, so we loaded up on junk food every day. This is Leadenhall Market, a trading centre in medieval times that now does a thriving lunch trade but closes up in the evening.
