The boat stops before Ayudhaya, at Bang Pa-in, one of the many royal palaces maintained around Thailand. This one is generally used to host visiting VIP's and is open to the public when no bigwig is staying there. It's incredibly hot, and you've got to run around because you're on the tour group's timetable, so this is when the boat option starts to be less appealing than DIY. It's more of a park than a palace, with lots of ornamental pieces (including questionable additions like the Roman statue knockoffs behind me on the bridge) scattered around. The best part of the palace is the story of the princess who died in the river outside the palace. She was out on a boat and the boat capsized and she fell in, but didn't know how to swim. She was of course with a large number of guards and servants, but they couldn't help her because no commoner was allowed to touch a royal on pain of death. So they all sat their and watched her drown instead.
